Cebu City witnessed a powerful display of unity and remembrance on February 25 as multi-sectoral groups took to the streets to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the historic EDSA People Power Revolution. The march began at Freedom Park and proceeded to Metro Colon in downtown Cebu, drawing citizens from all walks of life.

Participants carried banners, waved Philippine flags, and wore shirts adorned with the iconic yellow ribbon, symbolizing the enduring spirit of democracy and the sacrifices made during the 1986 uprising. Students, civil society organizations, church groups, and private citizens marched together, reflecting a shared commitment to remembering the lessons of the People Power Revolution.

“It’s important that we honor the courage of those who fought for our freedom,” said one marcher. “The EDSA Revolution was not just an event in history books; it’s a reminder that democracy requires vigilance and unity.”

The mobilization featured speeches, chants, and performances along the route, emphasizing the values of non-violence, civic participation, and accountability in governance. Participants also called for continued vigilance in protecting human rights and ensuring that the hard-won freedoms of the nation are preserved for future generations.

Organizers highlighted that this 40th anniversary is particularly significant as it coincides with ongoing discussions on civic engagement, transparency, and nation-building in contemporary Philippine society. “Remembering EDSA is not just about nostalgia; it’s about applying the lessons of unity and courage in our everyday lives,” an organizer said.

The event concluded at Metro Colon, where participants gathered for a moment of reflection and solidarity, reaffirming their commitment to uphold democracy and honor the legacy of those who made People Power possible.

The 40th anniversary of the EDSA Revolution serves as both a tribute and a call to action — reminding Filipinos across generations that the fight for freedom, justice, and accountability is ongoing, and that every citizen has a role to play in shaping the nation’s future.
