CEBU CITY — Carbon Public Market was bustling on Maundy Thursday, April 2, 2026, as many Cebuanos flocked to buy ingredients for binignit, a well-loved traditional dessert during Holy Week.

Vendors reported a steady increase in demand for key ingredients such as coconut, sweet potatoes, taro, bananas, and glutinous rice, which are essential in preparing the Visayan delicacy commonly served during Lent.

According to sellers, the surge in buyers reflects the strong tradition among families to cook binignit, especially on Holy Thursday and Good Friday.

Current market prices of ingredients are estimated as follows:

• Coconut – ₱25–₱35 each

• Sweet potato (camote) – ₱60–₱80 per kilo

• Taro (gabi) – ₱80–₱120 per kilo

• Banana (saba) – ₱70–₱100 per kilo

• Glutinous rice (pilit) – ₱90–₱120 per kilo

• Sago – ₱20–₱30 per pack

Overall, the cost of preparing binignit for a family may range from ₱250 to ₱400, depending on the quantity and quality of ingredients.

Despite rising prices, many Cebuanos continue to observe the tradition, keeping the spirit of Holy Week alive through food and family gatherings.
