Lapu-Lapu shifts selected offices to four-day workweek to cut fuel, power use

Residents visiting the Lapu-Lapu City Hall are advised to check the operating schedules of government offices after selected departments shifted to a four-day workweek as part of the city’s efforts to reduce fuel and electricity consumption.

The revised arrangement took effect on Oct. 26 under Executive Order No. 2026-74, issued by Mayor Ma. Cynthia “Cindi” King-Chan on Oct. 20.

Covered offices now operate from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Monday to Thursday, with a 30-minute lunch break.

The adjustment comes amid rising fuel prices and power supply constraints, with the city government seeking to reduce transportation and energy costs without disrupting essential public services.

King-Chan said the shortened workweek is intended to reduce daily commuting, fuel demand and electricity consumption by consolidating office operations.

“This arrangement is part of the City’s efforts to conserve fuel and energy while ensuring the continuous delivery of essential public services,” she said.

The four-day schedule covers the Office of the Mayor, Office of the City Administrator, Office of the Vice Mayor, Sangguniang Panlungsod, City Treasurer, City Budget Officer, Business Permits and Licensing Office, Tourism Office and Public Information Office.

However, offices responsible for essential and frontline services will retain their regular Monday-to-Friday operations from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

These include the City Health Office, Lapu-Lapu City Hospital, City Social Welfare and Development Office, Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, City Traffic Management System, and the drainage and road maintenance team of the City Engineering Office.

The City Environment and Natural Resources Office, City Civil Registrar, City Veterinarian’s dog impounding and abattoir operations, Office of the Market Administrator and Solid Waste Management Office will also continue operating five days a week.

The executive order allows heads of offices covered by the shortened workweek to require certain divisions, units or personnel to follow regular working hours when necessary, subject to the mayor’s approval.

The city government announced the implementation on Thursday, Nov. 5, and urged residents to check the revised schedules before transacting with affected departments.
