The Supreme Court is set to lose its chief magistrate at the end of the week, but Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo leaves behind reforms aimed at modernizing court operations, strengthening professional accountability and widening access to justice.
Gesmundo, the 27th chief justice of the Supreme Court, will retire upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70. He was appointed associate justice in 2017 and became chief justice in 2021.
During his tenure, the high tribunal navigated disruptions caused by the global pandemic while adapting to technological developments that reshaped the delivery of public services and the legal system.
In a statement on Wednesday, Associate Justice Midas Marquez credited Gesmundo with leading the court through these changes and pursuing reforms intended to improve the judiciary.
“We express our deepest gratitude to Chief Justice Alex for his transformative leadership, unwavering commitment to innovation, and inspiring dedication to serving the Filipino people with compassion and excellence,” Marquez said.
Gesmundo also underscored the importance of ethical standards and accountability in journalism amid the growing influence of artificial intelligence and online personalities, including bloggers and influencers who present themselves as journalists.
He has called for the professionalization of journalism, emphasizing the role of trained media practitioners in observing ethical standards and accountability to ensure the public receives reliable information that can shape public opinion.
His emphasis on professional responsibility also extended to the legal sector, where reforms during his leadership sought to strengthen ethical conduct among lawyers and improve access to legal services.
Private lawyer Raymund Marcelino described Gesmundo’s tenure as one marked by institutional reforms, modernization and cooperation among government agencies.
“CJ Alex Gesmundo’s term can be described as having a strong emphasis on institutional reforms, modernization, and inter-agency cooperation. The court’s digitalization of processes and procedures reflects his vision of a modern judiciary,” Marcelino said.
He cited the adoption of the Code of Professional Responsibility and Accountability as a significant measure reflecting the court’s focus on ethical conduct, accountability and service.
Marcelino also pointed to the Unified Legal Aid Service as an example of Gesmundo’s efforts to improve access to justice by ensuring the delivery of competent legal assistance.
“CJ Gesmundo showcases ideals of service, sacrifice, and excellence during his stint as Chief of the Supreme Court,” he added.
Gesmundo’s retirement will end his leadership of the high tribunal, where his administration pursued changes in court procedures, professional standards and legal assistance.
