The Department of Education (DepEd) Mandaue City Division has strengthened school safety measures following the recent shooting incident at a school in Tacloban City last Monday, June 22.
DepEd Mandaue Legal Officer III and spokesperson Atty. Marinel D. Oro said the division has reinforced directives to school heads as part of its response to ensure safer school environments for students, personnel, and visitors.
Oro said one of the key measures is the reminder and strict implementation of DepEd Order No. 6, s. 2026, which provides guidelines on maintaining a safe and conducive learning environment.
She said schools have also been directed to reinforce security procedures, including the conduct of bag inspections at school entrances.
Under the guidelines, at least one school security guard is tasked to conduct non-contact initial inspections of students, employees, parents, and visitors entering school premises.
Oro added that security personnel are expected to use functional metal detectors during initial screening and may only proceed to body searches when there is reasonable suspicion, in line with existing protocols.
She said the division is also coordinating with local government units, school administrators, the police, and barangay authorities to further strengthen security measures in schools.
According to Oro, part of the effort is ensuring proper identification of individuals entering school premises and preventing prohibited items from being brought inside campuses.
She emphasized that these measures are aimed at reducing risks and maintaining order within schools.
“We hope to keep our schools safe and secure from all of this violence,” Oro said.
