Task force defends journalists, hits Marcoleta over 'bayaran' accusation

The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFOMS) on Thursday, June 4, expressed concern over statements made by Senator Rodante Marcoleta, who described members of the media covering the Senate as “bayaran” or paid hacks, saying such remarks are unfounded and could endanger journalists.

In a press statement, PTFOMS said the claim “is not only unfounded but poses a significant threat to the security and safety of journalists who perform essential roles in our democracy.”

The task force cited Marcoleta’s remarks during a Senate meeting, where he said: “Kayo pong mga participants sa media, na karamihan po sa inyo ay bayaran, sasabihin ko sa inyo ito, mayroon po bang nagsalita sa kanila?” referring to media members present during the proceedings.

PTFOMS warned that sweeping accusations against journalists may weaken public trust in the press and expose media workers to potential harm, emphasizing their role in ensuring transparency and accountability in government.

The agency underscored that journalists have a responsibility to report accurately and impartially, while stressing that public officials should likewise respect the press as part of democratic checks and balances.

It also called on Senator Marcoleta to either substantiate his claims with evidence or withdraw his statement and issue an apology to the media workers affected by his remarks.

“Casting vague aspersions against the media doesn’t foster constructive dialogue. It threatens the very foundations of democratic processes by attempting to sway public opinion against those tasked with holding those in power to account,” the statement read.

PTFOMS reiterated its appeal for respect toward journalists, stressing that criticism of media must be based on verified facts. It added that safeguarding press freedom is essential to maintaining a “safe and thriving environment” for democratic discourse.
