Ahead of Brigada Eskwela 2026, Lapu-Lapu City schools and barangays are stepping up environmental efforts through contests and programs aimed at improving waste management and strengthening community participation.
During the third regular Local School Board meeting, education and local government officials discussed preparations for the June 1 to 5 Brigada Eskwela activities, with emphasis on solid waste management and environmental responsibility in public schools.
The Department of Education and the Lapu-Lapu City Government, together with the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), are implementing initiatives that encourage schools and communities to adopt cleaner and more sustainable practices.
Among the key programs is the Plastic Innovation Challenge, which encourages students and school communities to develop creative solutions to plastic waste through recycling and the use of alternative materials.
The city has also launched the search for the Greenest and Cleanest Purok and Barangay, with contest guidelines, criteria, and prizes presented to barangay leaders as part of preparations for broader participation.
Officials said the competitions are open to students, schools, and community groups, and are intended to build momentum ahead of Earth Day and National Environment Month in June.
City leaders noted that the initiative aims to recognize clean and well-managed communities while also promoting long-term changes in waste segregation practices and environmental awareness.
Environmental programs remain a priority under the King-Chan administration, which continues to enforce policies on single-use plastics, promote proper waste segregation, and implement Project CINDI (Community-Integrated Nutrition through Diverse Initiative), which supports urban gardening in schools.
CENRO also reported that DepEd has begun an inventory of solid waste management facilities in public schools to assess compliance and strengthen environmental implementation moving forward. (VCL)
