Pedestrians now have a safer way to cross the busy South Road Properties (SRP) highway after the elevated footbridge connecting Il Corso partially opened to the public this week.
The bridge, developed within the City di Mare (CDM) township, began limited operations as part of road safety initiatives in the fast-growing SRP district.
It is currently open daily from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., while developers complete minor finishing works, including the installation of specialized bridge components.
“We will be partially opening the bridge for use as part of our road safety initiatives,” said Gwen Sala, deputy general manager of CDM.
She said the structure is already functional, with full completion expected by the end of April, when the bridge will operate 24 hours a day.
The facility will also feature elevators for persons with disabilities (PWDs).
The bridge is accessible to all pedestrians, including cyclists and visitors walking with pets. Security personnel will patrol the area, with additional guards deployed by the contractor during nighttime work.
Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival said the opening addresses long-standing safety concerns along the high-speed SRP corridor, where pedestrians often cross the highway.
He cited a fatal accident on February 14, when an elderly couple was hit while crossing the road, as a key reason for requesting the early opening of the footbridge.
“During that time, we realized that it is important for the city to look after the safety not only of Cebuanos but also those who visit here,” Archival said.
He thanked the developer for responding to the request.
Archival added that the elevated walkway will reduce accidents by providing a designated crossing above traffic and could also encourage more foot traffic, boosting economic activity in the area.
Visitors can now move more conveniently between Il Corso and nearby developments without crossing the busy highway at street level.
The Il Corso footbridge is the latest pedestrian infrastructure in the SRP, and Sala said additional developments may follow as the City di Mare project continues to expand.
Once fully completed in April, the bridge will provide a permanent and safer crossing for pedestrians in one of Cebu City’s busiest coastal districts. (LLP)
