Heart-shaped gifts and candlelit dinners may define Valentine’s Day for many Filipinos, but health officials are reminding couples that protection should also be part of the celebration.

As the country marks Valentine’s Day on Saturday, the Department of Health (DOH) called on couples to practice safe sex to prevent the transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other sexually transmitted infections.

In an advisory released ahead of the occasion, the DOH emphasized that practicing safe sex not only reduces the risk of sexually transmitted illnesses but also helps prevent unintended pregnancies, supporting more effective family planning for couples.

The agency underscored that protection should not be overlooked, even in committed relationships.

“Trust alone is not enough when it comes to sex. You must also have assurance when it comes to protection against sexually transmitted infections, like HIV,” said the DOH.

The department particularly advised individuals who are still in the dating stage or not yet married to use protection during sexual activity. It stressed that being proactive is key to reducing the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.

According to the DOH, protective measures are accessible through local health centers and social hygiene clinics across the country. These facilities offer combination prevention methods at no cost to the public.

“Condoms, lubricants, and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) are available for free to ensure protection from HIV during sex,” said the DOH.

The agency reiterated that taking preventive steps remains essential, especially during occasions when couples are more likely to express intimacy, as part of broader efforts to curb HIV transmission and promote responsible sexual health practices.
