Mandaue fire victims to receive cash aid within two weeks

Families whose homes were damaged in a fire in Barangay Labogon are expected to receive financial assistance from the city government within two weeks, City Administrator Atty. Gonzalo Malig-on Jr. said Friday, Oct. 23.

Malig-on said the city was expediting the release of assistance to help affected families meet their immediate needs.

“Ang gusto sa Mayor mahatag dayon ang assistance maybe in two weeks para matabangan na pod sila kung unsa ilang kagamitan anang cash assistance gikan sa city,” Malig-on said.

The city government will provide P10,000 to owners and renters of totally damaged houses and P5,000 to those whose homes were partially damaged.

The City Social Welfare Services Office (CSWSO) began profiling affected families on Thursday, Oct. 22, to validate beneficiaries and determine who would qualify for the aid.

“Ang purpose ana, mao nay basehan para mahatag ang financial assistance sa Mayor,” Malig-on said.

City records as of Oct. 23 showed that 106 families were affected by the fire, which destroyed 72 houses and partially damaged four others.

The fire broke out on Oct. 20, affecting portions of Sitio Centro, Lapyahan and Sliding Hills in Barangay Labogon and causing an estimated P1.5 million in property damage.

On Oct. 21, Mayor Thadeo Jovito “Jonkie” Ouano visited the affected area and met with families temporarily sheltered at the Barangay Labogon gymnasium. He was accompanied by city councilors and department heads to assess the situation and oversee the delivery of initial assistance.

The city government provided food and drinking water, while the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office set up emergency tents.

The CSWSO also distributed disaster kits containing shirts, shorts, towels, blankets, sleeping mats, toiletries and other hygiene supplies.

The City Health Office provided medical assistance to affected residents, including those injured during the fire.

The families remain temporarily sheltered at the barangay gymnasium as the city government, barangay officials and private establishments coordinate the delivery of food and other necessities.

Malig-on clarified that the site where the fire occurred is privately owned and is not government property.
