Sinulog 2027 opens early registration as organizers weigh number of contingents

Sinulog 2027 organizers are opening the door for contingents earlier, but the number of groups that will eventually compete remains uncertain as the festival seeks to balance participation with crowd and parade management.

Sinulog Foundation Inc. (SFI) Executive Director Elmer Labella said groups interested in joining the Grand Parade may already express their intention to participate, with registration set to close on Nov. 30 or Dec. 1.

“As early as, of course, October or even now, they can already signify intentions and to register,” Labella said.

“But the deadline is what is most important,” he added.

Several groups have already expressed interest, but Labella said their participation will depend on whether they can secure funding from their respective local government units and private supporters.

Contingents typically need to allocate funds for choreographers, production designers, costumes, props and other festival requirements before making a formal commitment.

SFI has yet to determine the final number of competing groups but has continued coordinating with contingents that have already signified their intention to join.

Groups that participated in the Cebu provincial government’s Pasigarbo sa Sugbo are also expected to join the Sinulog Grand Parade.

The early registration comes as organizers continue to manage the size of the festival after reducing the number of contingents in recent years to prevent prolonged parade delays.

Sinulog 2026 had around 40 contingents, 37 of which competed. The previous year had about 64 contingents, with Labella saying the larger field contributed to a parade that extended beyond midnight.

For 2027, organizers plan to retain measures that helped improve the movement of the parade, including closer monitoring of performances and restrictions on activities that could cause delays.

Crowd control will also remain a major consideration. Labella said about 5.2 million people attended Sinulog 2026, making the movement of spectators and participants a key concern.

The Grand Parade will remain at the Cebu City Sports Center in 2027 despite proposals to return it to the South Road Properties.

The parade route will generally remain unchanged, although organizers are studying whether to extend portions of it to help ease congestion. Any adjustment will depend partly on the final number of contingents.

SFI is also considering stricter inspections of floats, particularly their prescribed height and width, to prevent obstructions along the route.

Meanwhile, the foundation is continuing discussions with previous sponsors, many of whom have indicated plans to support Sinulog 2027 again.

Labella said SFI is also encouraging more groups to participate despite the financial pressures involved in mounting contingents.

The number of groups that will ultimately compete will become clearer as the registration period progresses toward the December deadline.
