Marcos says criticism is part of the job of being President

Being misunderstood and criticized comes with the responsibility of being President, Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. said, adding that leaders must remain open to valid criticism even when comments are hurtful.

Marcos made the remarks in an interview with veteran singer and host Gary Valenciano on the “Unshaken with Gary V” podcast, where he discussed how he responds to criticism of his administration.

The President said he tries to look beyond negative comments and assess objectively whether critics have raised legitimate concerns that require attention.

“Mostly they’re not right, but sometimes, sometimes they are, and that’s why you have to be open-minded about it,” Marcos said.

He also acknowledged that government decisions and actions can be misinterpreted, describing this as part of the demands of public service.

“Of course, it’s often open to misinterpretation. But that’s part of the job. That’s okay,” he said.

Marcos said he hopes Filipinos would recognize the government’s efforts to improve the country and understand the intentions behind its actions.

“I just hope that people realize that and people know and that people feel what we are doing is right, that what we’re doing is for the better, and to understand that at least myself, the people around me, we are sincere in trying to make this country better,” he said.

He maintained that his administration’s decisions are guided by what he and his team believe would benefit the country and its people.

“We’re working, what we do is because we think it’s the best thing for Filipinos and for the Philippines,” Marcos said.
