More areas in Mandaue City will soon be covered by flood monitoring equipment as the city government moves to install additional rainfall and water-level stations in flood-prone locations.
The expansion was discussed during the city’s third-quarter City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) meeting on Sept. 25 at the Sangguniang Panlungsod Session Hall of the Mandaue Presidencia.
Under the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (DOST-PAGASA) Flood Early Warning Systems (FEWS) Project, two rainfall monitoring stations will be installed at the Budla-an Multipurpose Gym and the Mandaue City Parking Building.
Two water-level monitoring stations will also be established at Canduman Bridge and Butuanon Bridge II.
The city will additionally have three water post stations at Canduman Bridge, Butuanon Bridge II and the 6.5 Relocation Site to provide further monitoring points for rising water levels.
The additional facilities are intended to give the city more localized information on rainfall and water levels, allowing officials to better assess flood risks and strengthen preparedness and response measures.
The proposed system will also feature SMS/MMS-based, multi-channel alerts to expand the reach of disaster notifications when warnings are issued.
The city recommended exploring whether the system can also be linked to Cell Broadcast Service (CBS) alert channels in coordination with concerned government agencies.
The flood early warning initiative is being implemented in cooperation with Dongbu Engineering Co. Ltd. under the National Disaster Management Research Institute (NDMI) Project of the Republic of Korea.

Once operational, the additional monitoring facilities are expected to provide more localized data that the city can use in tracking rainfall and water-level changes and improving flood preparedness in vulnerable areas.
