The Visayas power grid will be placed under red alert for six hours on Friday as several power plants remain unavailable or operating at reduced capacity, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said.
In its advisory as of 8 a.m. Sept. 11, NGCP said the red alert will be in effect from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Yellow alerts will be raised from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and again from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m.
The grid has an available capacity of 2,320 megawatts (MW) against a peak demand of 2,002 MW.
NGCP said nine power plants were on forced outage as of September, including four that have been unavailable since August, one since July, two since June, seven since May, three since 2025, two since 2024, two since 2023 and one since 2021.
Fourteen other plants were operating at reduced capacities.
These outages and deratings resulted in a total of 1,030.1 MW of capacity being unavailable to the grid.
NGCP identified the unavailability of the Visayas’ large coal plants TVI 1, TVI 2 and PEDC 3, as well as limited power imports from the Mindanao grid, as factors behind the alert declarations.
A red alert is issued when available power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement.
A yellow alert means the operating margin is insufficient to meet the grid’s contingency requirement.
