NAGA CITY, Cebu — A 33-year-old man was arrested in a hot pursuit operation after he allegedly hacked his 19-year-old nephew following an argument over a mango in Naga City, Cebu, on July 13.
Police identified the suspect as alias “Matias,” while the victim was identified as alias “Lloyd,” a resident of Sitio Ugan, Barangay Lutac, Naga City.
According to the Naga City Police, the incident began when the suspect asked his nephew for a mango. The victim reportedly refused, explaining that the fruit belonged to his aunt.
Authorities said the refusal allegedly angered the suspect, who then attacked the victim with a bladed weapon. The first blow was aimed at the victim’s right thigh. However, a mango tucked inside the victim’s pocket absorbed the impact, preventing what could have been a more serious injury.
The victim attempted to flee, but the suspect allegedly chased him and attacked again, this time aiming for his head. Although the victim managed to dodge the blow, he sustained a wound on the left side of his neck.
The victim eventually escaped and called for help, while the suspect fled the scene.
Police later arrested the suspect in a hot pursuit operation. He is now detained at the Naga City Police Station and is expected to face appropriate charges.
Investigators said both the suspect and the victim had been drinking before the incident, and a heated exchange of words reportedly preceded the attack.
The investigation remains ongoing.
